The causeway islands between the mainland and Sanibel are a classic spot to fish from shore, with deep water and current running under the bridges.
The small pass between Sanibel and Captiva, with fast water and snook along the shoreline when it's open. It tends to fill in with sand and has been dredged open more than once.
The big, sheltered sound behind Sanibel and Captiva, full of grass flats and mangrove islands for redfish and trout.
Summer is snook season along the beaches and passes, and tarpon roll along the beaches and in the passes from late spring into summer. Fall is the redfish time in Pine Island Sound. Winter brings sheepshead to the causeway and docks, and trout to the deeper grass.
Hurricane Ian in 2022 reshaped a lot of this area, including the causeway, the beaches and some access points. Parking and access have been changing as rebuilding goes on, so check what's open before you go. San Carlos Bay drains a big area, which makes the causeway current strong around the middle of the tide.
Seasons, size limits and bag limits change. Check the current FWC saltwater fishing rules before you keep a fish.
