Tides from NOAA station Marco, Big Marco River. Always check the official NWS marine forecast before heading out.
The bridge over the Marco River onto the island. Current under the bridge and the deep channel nearby hold snook, sheepshead and mangrove snapper.
Capri Pass, Big Marco Pass and Caxambas Pass connect the backcountry to the Gulf, and each one fishes best when the tide is moving hard.
South of Marco starts a huge maze of mangrove islands and oyster bars stretching toward Everglades City, prime country for snook, redfish and tarpon.
Winter brings sheepshead to the bridges and docks, and snook and reds back into the creeks and rivers where the water stays warmer. Spring is excellent for snook and redfish in the backcountry. Summer has tarpon in the passes and along the beaches, and snook on the beaches at first light. Fall is redfish and snook along the mangrove shorelines.
The Ten Thousand Islands are shallow and full of oyster bars, and the mangrove islands all look alike. A falling tide can leave a boat sitting in the mud, so plan to come out on rising or high water, and run with a chart or GPS.
Seasons, size limits and bag limits change. Check the current FWC saltwater fishing rules before you keep a fish.
Scores update with the season, the tide and the light — the forecast shows which of these is strongest right now and when it peaks this week.
