Where people fish around Tarpon Springs

Fred Howard Park

A long causeway runs out to a small beach island on St. Joseph Sound, with open water and grass on both sides. It's one of the easiest places in north Pinellas to fish from shore.

Sunset Beach

A small Gulf-facing beach just south of the Anclote River mouth, good for wading and casting the shallows at sunset.

Anclote River

The river mouth and its docks and bends hold fish when the water cools, and the river's outflow pulls bait out on a falling tide.

Anclote Key

The barrier island offshore, reached by boat. Its grass flats and sandy shoreline are a classic trout and redfish drift.

Tarpon Springs fishing through the year

Winter is sheepshead time around the rocks, docks and pilings, and trout and redfish slide into the river and deeper potholes on cold mornings. Spring and fall are the best all-around seasons: trout and reds spread across the grass flats of St. Joseph Sound and Spanish mackerel move through. Summer brings snook to the beaches and the mouth of the river, best early and late in the day.

Local know-how

St. Joseph Sound is wide and shallow. After a winter cold front, a hard north or east wind can blow a lot of water off the flats, so lows run well below the tide chart and boats that go in on the high may not get back out. The flip side: those very low tides concentrate fish in the deeper holes and channel edges.

Seasons, size limits and bag limits change. Check the current FWC saltwater fishing rules before you keep a fish.
